The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced plans for a massive shutdown of all major cities across Nigeria on September 15, 2024, in protest against the recent hike in fuel prices and the alleged incompetence of Mele Kyari, the Director General of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

In a statement dated September 4, 2024, NANS expressed its frustration over the increasing hardship faced by Nigerians due to the surge in fuel prices. The student body demands an immediate reversal of the fuel price hike and the removal of Kyari from his position as the NNPC DG.

NANS has called on Nigerian students nationwide to join the protest, promising that the shutdown will be peaceful and lawful. The statement emphasizes the need for students to rise in unison to secure a better future for themselves and the masses.

The notification was signed by Senator Ojo Aderemi, President of the NANS Senate, and was copied to key security officials, including the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Defence Corps, the Commandant General of Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Chief of Defence Staff, and all State Governors.

NANS assured that while the protest will be peaceful, they expect the authorities to take necessary measures to maintain law and order during the demonstration.
