The Federal Government has restated its commitment to delivering a world-class transport system for Nigerians, with fresh plans targeting rail, road, and port infrastructure. The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, said the government is intensifying efforts to modernize narrow-gauge rail lines into standard-gauge systems to improve connectivity across the country and the West African sub-region. She added that automation of port operations and the development of deep-sea ports are also underway to boost trade efficiency.
In the Federal Capital Territory, Minister Nyesom Wike announced sweeping reforms aimed at overhauling public transport services. He disclosed that inspections have already been carried out at the Kugbo and Mabushi terminals, which are set for reconstruction as part of the reforms. According to the Minister, the upgrades will provide safer and more organized hubs for commuters in the city.
A new transport committee has also been inaugurated to ensure that reforms address long-standing issues of safety, regulation, and comfort in the sector. The committee is expected to submit recommendations that will guide the administration’s phased implementation of transport policies within the FCT.
Authorities stressed that both federal and city-level initiatives are aligned to reduce congestion, enhance safety, and strengthen Nigeria’s economic integration through improved transportation systems.
