A sudden deluge of rain on Tuesday brought Tokyo to a standstill, flooding streets, disrupting transportation, and cutting power to thousands of homes.

According to Japan’s Meteorological Agency, nearly 12 centimeters of rain fell within just one hour, overwhelming drainage systems in parts of the capital. Streets in low-lying areas were submerged, while strong lightning forced a temporary suspension of ground services and air traffic control at Haneda Airport, halting departures.

Rail services, including bullet trains and several regional lines, were also suspended. Meanwhile, more than 7,000 households lost electricity during the storm, though most had power restored later in the day.

Authorities have warned that more thunderstorms are likely overnight and urged residents to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and remain alert for further disruptions.
