Killing of Arise TV Anchor Somtochukwu Maduagwu Regrettable, Says Information Minister

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has described the killing of Arise TV anchor, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, as a regrettable tragedy and a painful loss to the Nigerian media and the nation.

In a condolence letter addressed to Arise News chairman, Nduka Obaigbena, the minister wrote, “I write to convey our deepest condolences to you and the entire ARISE News family on the shocking and untimely death of your esteemed anchor, Ms. Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who by every account was a vibrant and a dedicated news anchor, consummate lawyer, and a model of professionalism whose work resonated with audiences across Nigeria and beyond.”

Idris said he was deeply saddened by the “heinous incident that cut down a promising young journalist in her prime,” stressing that her passing represents a grievous loss not only to Arise TV, but also to Nigeria’s media fraternity and the country at large.

The minister assured that a full and swift investigation will be carried out to determine the circumstances surrounding her death. He extended his “heartfelt sympathy to the parents, siblings, colleagues, and all who knew and loved the late news anchor,” while praying for strength and comfort for her family.

Maduagwu, a rising figure in Nigeria’s broadcast journalism, was widely regarded for her professionalism, eloquence, and dedication to the craft. Her sudden death has sparked widespread grief across the country and renewed calls for improved safety of journalists in Nigeria.
