President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, delivered a national broadcast on October 1, 2025, commemorating Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary. In his address, the President reflected on the sacrifices of the nation’s founding fathers and the journey of nationhood since 1960, emphasizing the need to continue building a strong, united, and prosperous Nigeria.
President Tinubu highlighted the country’s significant progress in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, noting that Nigeria now has over 23,000 secondary schools and 274 universities compared to just 120 secondary schools and two tertiary institutions at independence. He acknowledged the challenges of the past, including civil war, military rule, and political crises, but stressed that Nigerians have consistently demonstrated resilience and determination.
On economic achievements, the President stated that his administration inherited a near-collapsed economy but has since implemented reforms that have borne fruit. Key milestones include a 4.23% GDP growth in Q2 2025, inflation reduction to 20.12%, record non-oil revenue of over N20 trillion, a strengthened foreign reserve of $42.03 billion, stabilization of the Naira, and a consistent trade surplus. Tinubu also highlighted domestic oil production growth, coal mining recovery, expansion of transport infrastructure, and recognition by sovereign credit rating agencies.
Security remained a priority, with the President commending the armed forces and other agencies for their efforts in combating terrorism, banditry, and violent crimes, noting the return of peace to many liberated communities.
Addressing youth, President Tinubu emphasized their role as the nation’s future, highlighting initiatives such as NELFUND, Credicorp, YouthCred, and the upcoming iDICE programme to provide education and entrepreneurial support.
The President acknowledged that reforms have caused temporary economic pressures but assured Nigerians that the administration’s policies are building a stable, inclusive, and productive economy. He called on citizens to participate in nation-building, support local industries, and prioritize productivity and innovation.
Concluding his broadcast, President Tinubu expressed optimism for Nigeria’s future, stating, “With Almighty God on our side, I can assure you that the dawn of a new, prosperous, self-reliant Nigeria is here,” and wished Nigerians a happy 65th Independence Anniversary.
