Draconid Meteor Shower Set to Dazzle Tonight

The Draconid meteor shower reaches its peak tonight (October 8), giving skywatchers a chance to see bright “fireball” meteors streak across the evening sky.

The shower, created by debris from Comet 21P/Giacobini–Zinner, is active from October 6–10, with peak activity expected around 19:00 UTC. Unlike most meteor showers, the Draconids are best viewed soon after sunset, when the Draco constellation is high in the northern sky.

Astronomers predict around 10 meteors per hour under dark skies, though 2025 could bring a stronger burst as Earth moves through a dense trail of comet dust. A bright waning gibbous Moon may wash out fainter streaks, but brighter meteors should still be visible.

For the best view, find a dark spot away from city lights, face north or northwest, and allow your eyes to adjust for about 20 minutes. No telescope is needed just patience and clear skies for a glimpse of this short-lived cosmic display.
