The Federal Government, in collaboration with UNICEF and Evidence Action, has committed $30 million to address child malnutrition through the Small Quantity Lipid-Based Nutrient Supplements (SQ-LNS) initiative.
The programme aims to provide nutrient-rich supplements to over two million children between six and twenty-three months of age, focusing on states with a high burden of malnutrition. It seeks to improve child nutrition, enhance growth, and reduce deaths linked to undernutrition.
Of the total amount, the Federal Government will contribute $15 million, which UNICEF will match with an equal amount, bringing the total investment to $30 million. This funding will enable the purchase of about 600,000 cartons of nutrient supplements to be distributed nationwide through community health programmes.
Health workers will also receive training to guide mothers and caregivers on the correct use of the supplements and to monitor progress at the community level. The SQ-LNS initiative aligns with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda to improve child health, nutrition, and human capital development across Nigeria.
