In a proactive move to promote water safety and reduce the fear of water among young Lagosians, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has started a week-long water safety and swimming training program for school children in Badagry Local Government Area.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Blue Economy, Mr Damilola Emmanuel, stated this to the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Lagos.
The initiative is part of LASWA’s ongoing advocacy campaign known as the “Lagos Water Savvy Kids Program.” The program is being implemented in partnership with the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the Dolphin Swim School (DSS) a premier swimming institution focused on empowering women and children with essential aquatic skills.
The training which is in its fifth edition, is sketched to provide school children with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in water safety, swimming techniques, and basic emergency survival skills.
A total of 50 pupils from five public schools in Badagry Lagos have been selected to take part in this year’s program. The participating schools were chosen to reflect communities where waterway transportation is a regular part of daily life.
With this initiative, LASWA is operating toward a safer, more confident generation of waterway users who are safety -conscious, self-reliant, and well-prepared for any challenges they may encounter on the water.
The training which started Monday the 20th of October 2025 is predicted to end on Friday 24th October 2025.
