Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II, who unexpectedly stepped down earlier this year, has been hospitalized following a fall at her residence, Danish media reported Thursday. Despite the incident, reports confirm she is in stable condition.
The 84-year-old queen was admitted to the University Hospital in Copenhagen on Wednesday evening for observation after falling at Fredensborg Castle, located north of the capital, according to the royal household.
“Considering the circumstances, the queen is doing well but remains under observation for now,” said Lene Balleby, the head of communications, as reported by Danish media.
The royal family offered no further details.
Margrethe had been scheduled to attend an event on Friday celebrating the 75th anniversary of Aarhus University’s Department of Archaeology, but her attendance has been canceled. A student of prehistoric archaeology at Copenhagen University, the queen previously remarked that she would have pursued a career in archaeology had she not become monarch.
In January, Margrethe made history by becoming the first Danish monarch to step down in nearly 900 years, passing the throne to her son, Crown Prince Frederik. Throughout her 52-year reign, she had vowed never to abdicate, but following back surgery and other health issues, she acknowledged her limitations.
“Time takes its toll,” she said, announcing her decision to step down in a New Year’s speech that surprised the nation.
