Borussia Dortmund advanced to the last 16 of the German Cup after edging Eintracht Frankfurt 4-2 on penalties in their second-round clash on Tuesday, following a 1-1 draw after extra time.

Dortmund were perfect from the spot, with Fabio Silva, Niklas Süle, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Felix Nmecha all converting their penalties. Frankfurt’s Ritsu Doan and Fares Chaibi both missed crucial kicks for the hosts.

Former Dortmund players Mario Götze and Ansgar Knauff combined to give Frankfurt the lead after just seven minutes, with Götze slipping a precise pass through for Knauff to finish coolly. Dortmund equalised three minutes into the second half when Julian Brandt tapped in Julian Ryerson’s low cross from close range.

Germany striker Jonathan Burkardt thought he had secured the win for Frankfurt deep into extra time, but his 115th-minute effort was ruled out for offside. In the shootout, Can Uzun and Michy Batshuayi scored for Frankfurt, but Doan fired over before Chaibi’s tame effort was saved by Gregor Kobel to seal Dortmund’s progression.

“We’ve got a sensational goalkeeper and plenty of good penalty takers. It feels nice,” said Brandt after the win.

The tie was a repeat of the 2017 German Cup final — won 2-1 by Dortmund — when current Borussia coach Niko Kovač was in charge of Frankfurt.

Elsewhere, RB Leipzig cruised past Energie Cottbus 4-1 thanks to braces from Johan Bakayoko and Christoph Baumgartner. Bochum edged Augsburg 1-0 away, Borussia Mönchengladbach beat Karlsruhe 3-1, Hertha Berlin dispatched Elversberg 3-0, Hamburg won 1-0 at Heidenheim, and Holstein Kiel stunned Wolfsburg 1-0.

Action continues on Wednesday, with 20-time winners Bayern Munich visiting Cologne and holders Stuttgart facing Mainz
