The Senate has confirmed the nominations of new Service Chiefs forwarded by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marking another strategic step in the administration’s ongoing efforts to strengthen national security and enhance the country’s defence architecture.

The confirmation followed a formal request transmitted by President Tinubu and read during plenary by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio. The upper chamber subsequently screened and endorsed the nominees, having suspended its relevant rules to expedite the process in recognition of the urgent need for stability and coordination across the security sector.

Those confirmed include General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Waidi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral Idi Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff. Major General Emmanuel Undiendeye was also retained as Chief of Defence Intelligence, continuing his role in strategic intelligence coordination and counterintelligence operations.

With the confirmation of the new Service Chiefs, the Federal Government is expected to consolidate gains in internal security operations, improve inter-agency coordination, and strengthen Nigeria’s response to emerging threats. The move aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes effective leadership, institutional reform, and a professional security system capable of safeguarding lives, property, and national interests.
