Barcelona’s iconic Sagrada Família has reached a new architectural milestone, officially becoming the tallest church in the world after workers installed the first part of a cross atop its central tower. The basilica now stands at 162.91 meters, surpassing Ulm Minster in Germany, which had held the record since 1890.
Designed by the visionary architect Antoni Gaudí, the Sagrada Família has been under construction in the heart of Barcelona for more than 140 years. The basilica’s central Tower of Jesus Christ will continue to rise over the next few months as the remaining parts of the cross are added, bringing the total height to 172 meters once completed.
The first stone of the Sagrada Família was laid in 1882, with Gaudí assuming leadership of the project a year later. He radically transformed the original concept into a breathtaking masterpiece of modernist design, initially funded by donations from devout worshippers. By the time of his death in 1926, only one of the planned eighteen towers had been completed.
Over the decades, the Sagrada Família Foundation has overseen construction, relying on contributions from tourists, visitors, and private donors. Yet, progress has been far from smooth. The Spanish Civil War saw Catalan anarchists set fire to Gaudí’s workshop, destroying his original plans and models—an event that would shape the course of the project for generations.
More recently, the COVID-19 pandemic brought construction to a halt due to a sharp decline in tourism, severely impacting funding. But perseverance has remained the project’s hallmark. In September, General Director Xavier Martínez told the Associated Press that the Tower of Jesus Christ would be completed in 2026—a fitting tribute marking the centenary of Gaudí’s death.
The foundation plans to hold a series of commemorative events honoring the legendary architect, whose remains rest in the church’s crypt. Work on the basilica’s intricate sculptures, decorative features, and main entrance stairway is expected to continue for another decade, keeping alive Gaudí’s extraordinary vision of faith expressed through architecture.
At Jocomms, we find it deeply inspiring that a project that began with one man’s dream in the 19th century continues to capture the world’s imagination well into the 21st. The Sagrada Família is not merely a building—it is a living testament to human creativity, resilience, and devotion.
