China has voiced strong opposition to comments reportedly made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who said he designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” due to what he called an existential threat to Christianity, and warned that the U.S. could cut off all assistance or even launch military operations if killings of Christians continue.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a regular press conference that China, as Nigeria’s comprehensive strategic partner, firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people along a development path suited to its national conditions.
“China firmly opposes any country using religion and human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, and threatening other countries with sanctions and force,” Mao said.
Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs earlier stated that the allegations made by the U.S. president do not reflect the true situation in Nigeria.
