
The Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Benue State, Alhaji Ardo Risku Muhammad, and his associate, Yakubu Isah, have been killed in an ambush by suspected gunmen shortly after attending a peace and security meeting in Ohinmini Local Government Area.
The victims were reportedly returning from the meeting, which was convened by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ohinmini and attended by community leaders and Fulani herders to discuss security concerns in Ayunne community, when they were attacked around Okudu in neighbouring Otukpo Local Government Area. The assailants reportedly opened fire on their vehicle, killing both men at the scene.
Confirming the incident, Otukpo Local Government Chairman, Maxwell Ogiri, described the attack as unfortunate and said it had heightened tensions in the area.
He appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid reprisals while security agencies investigate the incident.
The Chairman of Ohinmini Local Government Area, Adole Gabriel, also confirmed that the peace meeting had ended peacefully before the victims were ambushed on their way home.
Meanwhile, the Benue State Police Command has confirmed the killings. The command’s spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, said an investigation has commenced to identify those behind the attack and ensure they are brought to justice.
