Australia has expanded its social media restrictions for minors, adding Reddit and livestreaming platform Kick to the list of services banned for users under 16 from December.
Under the new rules, social platforms will be required to close underage accounts or face penalties of up to AU$50 million. The Australian government says the measures are aimed at protecting young users from harmful content, online exploitation, and targeted advertising.
The expansion comes as global regulators intensify scrutiny of major tech companies and their impact on children’s mental health and privacy. The policy is being closely monitored worldwide as countries debate stricter age-verification systems and children’s digital rights.
Technology firms, however, have warned that such policies could raise significant privacy and implementation concerns, potentially requiring intrusive verification methods.
