Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum was reportedly subjected to an unwanted physical advance on Tuesday during a public appearance in downtown Mexico City. The incident, which was captured on video and quickly circulated on social media, showed a man appearing to touch the president inappropriately as she greeted citizens.

Eyewitnesses said the man, who appeared intoxicated, leaned in and attempted to kiss Sheinbaum’s neck while placing his hands on her body. In the footage, the president can be seen calmly removing the man’s hands before saying, “Don’t worry,” as aides and security personnel stepped in to separate them.

Authorities later confirmed that the suspect was detained and taken into custody by the Sexual Offences Unit for questioning. The Office of the Attorney General of Mexico City said an investigation is underway to determine the appropriate charges.

While President Sheinbaum has not issued an official statement, members of her administration have condemned the act as “unacceptable” and reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance stance on gender-based harassment and violence.

The incident marks a troubling moment for Sheinbaum, Mexico’s first female president, and has sparked widespread public debate about the treatment and safety of women in political and public spaces.
