The Federal Government, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has announced a N12 billion investment in research initiatives aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s digital economy and enhancing the country’s competitiveness in the global technology landscape. The funding was unveiled by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, during the 18th International Conference on Theory and Practice of Electronic Governance (ICEGOV 2025) in Abuja.
The investment will fund three major research clusters across six Nigerian universities, focusing on artificial intelligence (AI), connectivity, and digital skills and literacy. According to Dr. Tijani, the initiative is part of the administration’s strategy to ensure that Nigeria’s citizens and institutions are equipped to innovate, govern, and participate effectively in a rapidly evolving digital world.
This move underscores President Tinubu’s commitment to accelerating Nigeria’s ICT sector growth, expanding digital infrastructure, and positioning the country as a leader in technology and innovation on the global stage. The N12 billion research program is expected to catalyze technology-led development, foster innovation ecosystems, and enhance Nigeria’s international tech competitiveness.
