Typhoon Kalmaegi struck central Vietnam on Thursday after leaving at least 114 people dead and more than 120 missing in the Philippines.

In the Philippines, the storm tore through Cebu Province with winds up to 150 km/h (93 mph), flattening homes, flooding cities, and cutting power across several regions. Over 200,000 residents were evacuated before landfall. A state of emergency has been declared as rescue and recovery efforts continue.

After crossing the South China Sea, Kalmaegi regained strength and hit Gia Lai Province in Vietnam. Authorities evacuated hundreds of thousands of residents and closed airports and schools in several provinces. The storm is expected to bring heavy rain, floods, and landslides, particularly in key coffee-producing areas.

Kalmaegi is among the deadliest storms of 2025, underscoring the region’s growing vulnerability to extreme weather events linked to climate change. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
