Troops of the Joint Task Force (JTF) North East Operation HADIN KAI have rescued 74 stranded members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) along the Buratai–Kamuya road in Borno State.
According to a statement made available on the Nigerian Army’s X account on Thursday, the incident happened around 9:05 p.m. on Tuesday when the corps members’ vehicles broke down in a forested area identified as the Boko Haram crossing point.
The statement revealed that troops monitoring the area through a Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) system detected unusual movement involving three buses and immediately deployed a patrol team to the location.
The troops found 74 corps members, made up of 36 males and 38 females, stranded after their vehicles developed mechanical faults. They secured the area and rescued all of them, preventing a possible abduction by terrorists operating within the axis.
Preliminary findings showed that the corps members were earlier escorted from Maiduguri to Damaturu by troops of the 7 Division Garrison.
However, they continued their journey to Hawul Local Government Area without notifying Sector 2 Headquarters or obtaining an armed escort.
The rescued corps members are now being accommodated at the Buratai Military Base pending further arrangements for their movement.
“The Nigerian Army remains committed to safeguarding the lives and property of all citizens and will continue to maintain a strong security presence across operational theatres to deny terrorists freedom of action and ensure lasting peace in the North East.
However, the public are urged to continue collaborating and cooperating with troops who are relentlessly engaged in safeguarding them.
