President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed that police officers currently assigned to protect Very Important Persons (VIPs) across the country be withdrawn and redeployed to focus on their primary law enforcement responsibilities.
The directive was issued during a security meeting on Sunday in Abuja, which brought together the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu; the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Tosin Adeola Ajayi.
Under the new arrangement, VIPs seeking personal protection will now be required to request security from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), which will provide well-armed personnel for such duties.
The move is aimed at strengthening police presence across the country, particularly in remote areas where security challenges are heightened due to inadequate manpower at local police stations.
President Tinubu has also approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police officers and is working with state governments to upgrade police training facilities nationwide, signaling a renewed commitment to enhancing public safety and community protection.
