Nigeria’s ₦200bn Aquaculture Faces Antibiotic Threat

The Federal Government has warned that indiscriminate use of antibiotics in fish farming could undermine Nigeria’s aquaculture industry, valued at over ₦200 billion.

Officials say improper antibiotic use accelerates antimicrobial resistance (AMR), increasing production costs, risking fish mortality, and potentially affecting human health through drug residues.

Dr. Samuel Anzaku, Chief Veterinary Officer, urged farmers to consult veterinarians, observe drug withdrawal periods, and adopt better biosecurity practices. The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development is also intensifying awareness campaigns to promote responsible antibiotic use and sustainable aquaculture.

Failure to act, experts warn, could threaten both public health and the long-term growth of Nigeria’s fish farming sector. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
