Turaki-Led PDP NWC Says Governors Free to Leave Amid Party Turmoil

The Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has stated that governors and members are free to leave the party if they choose. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, said the Turaki leadership is focused on rebuilding the party and engaging stakeholders but will not restrain anyone from making their own political choices.

The statement comes amid deepening factional tensions following a controversial national convention in Ibadan, where Turaki was elected chairman. Several senior members, including Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike and former governor Ayodele Fayose, have been expelled for anti-party activities, opening the door for possible defections to other parties.

Political analysts say the developments highlight the growing cracks within Nigeria’s main opposition party ahead of the 2027 elections. While Turaki’s faction insists the party remains united, rival groups loyal to expelled leaders continue to challenge the legitimacy of the current leadership, escalating internal disputes.
