NLC Calls Nationwide Protest: Is December 17 Set to Become a Turning Point in Nigeria’s Security Crisis?

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced a nationwide protest scheduled for December 17, citing what it describes as the “degenerating security situation” across the country. The declaration follows the labour union’s national executive committee (NEC)-in-session meeting held on December 4, with an official notice circulated to all state councils on December 10. The NLC said rising insecurity has become intolerable, with citizens living in fear despite repeated calls for urgent government action.

In its statement, the NLC condemned the escalating incidents of banditry, kidnapping, and violent attacks, stressing that the situation has worsened in recent months. The union highlighted the November 17 abduction of female students from a boarding school in Kebbi State as a glaring example of the government’s failure to protect lives and ensure basic security. The organisation insists that Nigerians must unite to demand a safer nation as communities continue to experience devastating losses.

The December 17 protest is expected to draw large crowds nationwide as labour leaders mobilise workers, civil society groups, and concerned citizens to raise their voices against insecurity. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news details and follow us on all our social media platforms.
