Onion farmers across Nigeria are warning of a significant rise in onion prices as the yuletide season approaches. The National Onion Producers, Processors, and Marketers Association of Nigeria (NOPPMAN), Kaduna State chapter, said demand for onions typically surges during Christmas and New Year celebrations, pushing prices upward.
In Kaduna, old onions harvested earlier this year are selling for approximately ₦50,000–₦60,000 per bag, while fresh onions from Sokoto are going for ₦80,000–₦100,000 per bag. Farmers attribute the increase to strong seasonal demand and limited supply from some onion-producing regions, as not all farms have been harvested yet.
“During the festive period, families and businesses stock up on onions, which naturally drives the price higher,” said a representative of NOPPMAN.
Experts warn that meaningful price relief is unlikely before January–March, when new harvests, particularly from Kebbi State, are expected to reach markets in larger quantities. Consumers are therefore advised to plan their purchases carefully and shop early if possible.
As yuletide approaches, households may need to adjust their food budgets to accommodate the higher cost of this staple ingredient. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
