Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has cautioned that efforts to weaken or destroy the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) could pose serious risks to Nigeria’s democracy.
Speaking during a media interaction, Governor Makinde stressed that the collapse of the main opposition party could undermine the country’s multiparty system and pave the way for a one‑party state.
He alleged that certain political actors, including the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, were involved in efforts to “hold down the PDP” in favour of President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.
Makinde reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP, revealing that he had declined an earlier invitation to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He also disclosed that his previous support for Tinubu in 2023 did not deliver the expected outcomes, and he will not back the President in 2027.
The Governor emphasised that while individuals are free to make political choices, protecting party pluralism is crucial for a healthy democracy.
Makinde’s comments come amid ongoing internal crises within the PDP, raising concerns about the stability of Nigeria’s opposition and the future of democratic competition in the country.
