The Federal Government has intensified efforts to fast-track the acquisition and delivery of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters for the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) as part of measures to strengthen national security and enhance air combat capability.

The move follows high-level engagements between senior NAF officials, United States government representatives and executives of Bell Textron, the manufacturer of the helicopters. The talks focused on accelerating production timelines, resolving logistical issues and ensuring timely delivery of the aircraft.

Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, led the Nigerian delegation to the United States, where a programme management review was conducted to ensure strict adherence to agreed schedules and budgets. According to the Air Force, the engagement underscores Nigeria’s commitment to modernising its air power and improving operational readiness.

The AH-1Z helicopters, designed for precision strikes, close air support and counter-insurgency operations, are expected to significantly enhance the NAF’s capacity to support ground troops in the fight against terrorism, banditry and other security challenges across the country.

Officials described the acquisition as part of a broader defence cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, noting that the helicopters will play a critical role in protecting lives and property while reinforcing ongoing security operations nationwide.
