President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has approved the repositioning of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) to report directly to the Presidency, ending its oversight by the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development.
The directive, communicated in a State House memorandum, also instructs the Attorney‑General of the Federation to amend the NSIB Establishment Act 2022 to reflect the change and submit the bill to the National Assembly for consideration.
Officials say the move aims to strengthen the Bureau’s independence and enhance oversight of transport safety across aviation, maritime, rail, and road sectors. The NSIB, which replaced the former Accident Investigation Bureau, investigates accidents and promotes safety in Nigeria’s transport system.
This decision resolves previous disagreements over the Bureau’s reporting structure and positions it closer to central policy-making authorities for more effective operation.
