Federal High Court Rules Former President Goodluck Jonathan Eligible for 2027 Presidential Race

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that former President Goodluck Jonathan is eligible to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Delivering its decision, the court affirmed Jonathan’s constitutional right to vie for the presidency again, effectively clearing a major legal challenge that had questioned his eligibility ahead of the next general elections.

The case was filed by a plaintiff seeking to bar Jonathan from contesting on the grounds that he had already been sworn in twice as President of Nigeria. However, the court dismissed the suit and upheld arguments that the constitutional provisions cited did not disqualify him from running.

Jonathan, who served as President from 2010 to 2015, is now legally free to pursue a return to active politics should he choose to do so.

The judgment comes amid growing political speculation over his possible comeback in the 2027 presidential race.
