A wave of grief swept through Iluke community in the Bunu District of Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State on Wednesday after armed bandits attacked the area, killing a school vice principal and two other residents while causing panic among students sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Among those killed was Mr. Gani Anifowose, Vice Principal of Government Secondary School, Iluke. Community sources said the attackers stormed the area in the early hours of the day, firing shots and creating fear across the community. Residents reported that the assault lasted for several hours before security forces responded.
Initial reports suggested that some students scheduled to sit for the WAEC English Language examination were abducted during the attack. However, the Kogi State Government later stated that security operatives successfully foiled what appeared to be an attempted mass abduction after engaging the attackers in a gun battle. According to the government, the students were rescued unharmed and returned to safety.
The state government disclosed that the gunmen allegedly disguised themselves in military uniforms to gain access to the community. Authorities also confirmed that one of the attackers was killed during the exchange of fire, while others escaped with injuries. A manhunt has been launched to track down the fleeing suspects.
In a statement, the government expressed condolences to the families of the victims and praised security personnel, local vigilantes, and hunters whose intervention helped prevent a larger tragedy. Officials also pledged to strengthen security measures in the area and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
The attack adds to growing concerns over the safety of schools in Nigeria, where kidnappings and assaults on educational institutions have continued to threaten students and staff in several parts of the country. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
