A traditional ruler in Kwara State, Oba Salman Aweda of Olayinka community in Ifelodun Local Government Area, has died while in the custody of his abductors despite the payment of a ransom.
The monarch was kidnapped on April 17, 2026, from his palace by armed men who later demanded about ₦21 million and additional items, including motorcycles and fuel, as condition for his release.
Community members reportedly mobilized and paid ₦18 million, along with the other demanded items, in an effort to secure his freedom. However, the monarch was not released after the payment was made.
According to community sources, subsequent efforts by family members, local leaders, and religious figures to negotiate his release were unsuccessful.
Communication from the abductors later suggested that the traditional ruler had died while still in captivity.
His death was later confirmed through a community announcement, which expressed deep sorrow over the incident and the failure of all rescue attempts.
Authorities have not yet disclosed official details surrounding the cause of death, but security agencies are said to have launched investigations and efforts to track down those responsible for the abduction.
The incident has renewed concerns over the growing wave of kidnappings in parts of Kwara State and other regions, where community leaders and traditional rulers continue to be targeted by armed groups. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
