President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on state governors across the country to prioritise investment in judicial infrastructure and welfare, stressing that a well-funded and properly equipped judiciary is critical to the administration of justice and the sustenance of democracy.
The President made the call on Tuesday during the commissioning of 10 Court of Appeal Judges’ Quarters in the Katampe District of Abuja. Represented by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), Tinubu described the project as a reflection of the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the independence, efficiency, and welfare of the judiciary.
According to the President, the responsibility of supporting the judiciary should not rest solely on the Federal Government. He urged state governments to ensure that courts and judicial institutions within their jurisdictions receive adequate funding and are provided with the infrastructure necessary for effective service delivery.
Tinubu noted that the newly commissioned housing project was a special intervention outside the judiciary’s regular budgetary allocations and emphasised that improving the welfare of judicial officers remains a strategic investment in the rule of law and democratic governance.
The President also commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for delivering the project and disclosed that additional land has been designated for the construction of residential quarters for judges of other federal courts.
Speaking at the event, Wike challenged governors to emulate the FCT Administration by supporting federal judicial institutions located within their states, noting that such courts primarily serve the people of those states.
The commissioning of the judges’ quarters forms part of the Tinubu administration’s broader efforts to strengthen judicial infrastructure, promote judicial independence, and enhance access to justice across Nigeria.
