Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to lasting peace, declaring that the country remains determined never to relive the horrors of war.

Akume made the remarks in Abuja while receiving the Country Representative of the Community of Saint Egidio in Nigeria, Prof. Jan De Volder, alongside the Deputy Ambassador of Italy to Nigeria, Mr. Iscopo Foti, and other officials.

The delegation formally invited the SGF to participate in an international peace conference scheduled to hold in Italy in October, where religious and political leaders from around the world will discuss strategies for promoting peaceful coexistence and interfaith dialogue.

Speaking during the meeting, Akume said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to peacebuilding through inclusive governance, religious tolerance and national unity.

He noted that although Nigeria continues to face security challenges in some parts of the country, sustained government interventions have significantly weakened terrorist and insurgent groups while strengthening social harmony.

The SGF said President Tinubu is working closely with relevant stakeholders to end insecurity and protect lives, adding that the Renewed Hope Agenda is also focused on driving economic recovery and ensuring inclusive national development.

Akume commended the Community of Saint Egidio for its global humanitarian and peacebuilding efforts and welcomed stronger collaboration with international partners to advance peace, stability and sustainable development.

Earlier, Prof. Jan De Volder said the organisation, which has operated in Nigeria for over two decades, is committed to promoting peace, supporting vulnerable communities and fostering dialogue among people of different faiths and backgrounds.

He expressed confidence that Nigeria’s experience in managing diversity and promoting peaceful coexistence would make a valuable contribution to discussions at the international peace gathering in Italy.

Senator Akume accepted the invitation to participate in the October conference, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening global partnerships that promote peace, security and sustainable development.
