FG Suspends 13 Students Over Bullying Incident at Federal Government College, Enugu

The Federal Government has suspended 13 students from the Federal Government College (FGC), Enugu, following a widely publicized bullying incident that took place on November 7, 2024. A viral video, circulated on social media, revealed a disturbing gang assault on an SS1 day student by a group of peers, sparking widespread outrage and calls for action.

In response, Dr. Tunji Alausa, Nigeria’s Minister of Education, released a statement titled “Ensuring a Safe and Secure Learning Environment,” in which he addressed the incident and highlighted the government’s commitment to school safety and discipline. Signed by Boriowo Folasade, the Director of Press and Public Relations for the ministry, the statement outlined steps being taken to investigate the incident thoroughly and to enhance security at FGC Enugu.

“The recent report highlighted a bullying incident at the Federal Government College (FGC), Enugu, which raised significant concerns about safety and discipline within the school environment,” the statement read. Based on preliminary findings from a disciplinary committee, the 13 students involved in the assault have been placed on a six-week suspension pending further investigation.

Dr. Alausa directed the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) to work closely with security agencies to investigate possible links between the incident and any external groups. Immediate steps have also been implemented to strengthen campus security by engaging law enforcement and revising existing safety protocols.

In addition to addressing security concerns, the Ministry of Education has mandated counseling and rehabilitation support for all affected students to facilitate their reintegration and promote a safe, positive school environment.

Dr. Alausa reassured parents, guardians, and the public that the Ministry is committed to upholding a safe learning atmosphere across Nigeria’s federal schools. “The Federal Ministry of Education will take all necessary actions to restore peace and ensure the protection of students at FGC Enugu,” he said. The minister also urged parents, school staff, and security personnel to work together to foster a secure atmosphere for students.

This incident has brought renewed attention to bullying and safety in Nigerian schools, with advocates calling for stronger measures to prevent future occurrences.
