The All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly condemned comments made by Governor Seyi Makinde during an opposition summit in Ibadan, accusing the governor of inciting violence and undermining national security.

In a press statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party criticized Makinde for referencing the historically violent “Operation Wetie” episode, describing the remark as reckless and inappropriate for a sitting governor.

The APC argued that Makinde’s comments go beyond political rhetoric and could fuel unrest, warning that invoking such a sensitive period in Nigeria’s history poses a threat to peace and stability. The party emphasized that, as a governor and chief security officer of his state, Makinde bears a constitutional responsibility to promote unity rather than division.

Calling on security and intelligence agencies to take the matter seriously, the APC stressed the need to safeguard lives, property, and Nigeria’s democratic order. The statement also noted that constitutional immunity does not shield public officials from accountability in matters affecting national security.

The ruling party further dismissed claims by opposition groups about Nigeria drifting toward a one-party state, attributing their challenges to internal crises, leadership struggles, and lack of cohesive direction. It accused opposition figures of failing to present a credible alternative vision for governance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Reaffirming its position, the APC stated that it remains committed to strengthening democratic institutions and delivering on its governance agenda under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The party concluded that Nigeria’s political space remains open and competitive, with multiple parties actively participating in the democratic process.
