Babachir urges ADC to drop Atiku, field stronger presidential candidate for 2027

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has advised the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to reconsider its 2027 presidential strategy, insisting that the party should replace former Vice President Atiku Abubakar with a more competitive candidate.

Lawal said the ADC stands little chance of winning the 2027 presidential election if it continues to rely on Atiku, arguing that the opposition needs a stronger and more broadly acceptable flagbearer to challenge President Bola Tinubu.

He also criticised the party’s current direction, following recent internal tensions within the ADC and debates surrounding its presidential primaries.

The former SGF’s remarks come amid growing political realignments within Nigeria’s opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
