The Rivers State Police Command has announced a temporary restriction of movement across seven local government areas (LGAs) in the state ahead of the upcoming by-election scheduled for Saturday.
According to the police, the restriction covers seven LGAs in Rivers State where the by-election will be conducted, and is part of broader security measures designed to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process.
The directive places a temporary ban on vehicular and human movement during the election period, except for accredited personnel such as officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies, and emergency service providers.
The police explained that the decision is aimed at preventing electoral violence, reducing disruptions, and ensuring voters can exercise their civic duties in a safe environment. Security operatives from the Nigeria Police Force and other sister agencies will be deployed across polling units, major roads, and strategic locations within the affected LGAs.
Residents have been urged to comply fully with the restriction order, avoid unnecessary movement during the voting hours, and cooperate with security agencies to maintain order throughout the exercise.
The Command further warned that any attempt to violate the restriction or engage in electoral misconduct, including intimidation or vote-buying, will be met with strict enforcement of the law.
Authorities assured the public of adequate security before, during, and after the by-election, calling on political stakeholders and voters to conduct themselves responsibly.
The by-election is being organized to fill vacant seats in the Rivers State House of Assembly. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
