At least 17 farmers have been killed and several others injured in a fresh attack by armed gunmen in Zamfara State, northwestern Nigeria, authorities and local residents said.
The incident occurred in Goron Namaye village, Maradun Local Government Area, where farmers were working on their fields when the attackers arrived on motorcycles and opened fire. Officials confirmed that the victims were buried after the assault, while injured survivors are receiving treatment.
Local leaders described the attack as sudden and violent, saying the gunmen targeted civilians engaged in routine farming activities. The injured include several people in critical condition.
Authorities say the assault is part of ongoing insecurity in the region, where rural communities have repeatedly faced deadly raids by armed groups commonly referred to as bandits. These groups often carry out killings, kidnappings, and extortion in remote farming areas, severely disrupting agriculture and daily life.
Security forces have reportedly been deployed to the area as investigations continue. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
