The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially adopted a zoning arrangement that reserves its 2027 presidential ticket for Southern Nigeria, with plans to return the presidency to the North in 2031 after a single term.
The decision was announced during the party’s national convention held in Abuja, where delegates and party stakeholders ratified the resolution as part of efforts to promote fairness, equity, and national unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the convention, the National Chairman of the party, Senator Cleopas Moses, said the zoning arrangement reflects the party’s commitment to balanced power-sharing and political stability in Nigeria. He explained that after the completion of one term in the South, power would return to Northern Nigeria in 2031.
The resolution received support from key party figures, including former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who described the arrangement as fair and consistent with the party’s internal agreement on power rotation.
The development comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with opposition parties and political actors intensifying consultations and coalition talks across the country.
