The Federal Government has announced plans to invest about ₦250 billion in 2026 for the construction of student hostels across tertiary institutions in Nigeria, as part of efforts to address the growing accommodation deficit in the education sector.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, disclosed this during a project flag-off ceremony for TETFund/Public-Private Partnership (PPP) hostel developments in Lagos State University (LASU) and Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH).
According to him, the initiative is designed to improve student welfare and learning conditions across universities and polytechnics nationwide.
He explained that the funding will be deployed through a mix of direct government investment and PPP arrangements, with thousands of bed spaces expected to be delivered across various institutions.
A breakdown of the project shows that part of the funds will be used to construct 500-bed hostels in over 50 tertiary institutions, while additional PPP projects will deliver larger hostels with capacities ranging from 1,200 to 1,500 bed spaces in selected schools.
The Minister added that the projects are expected to be completed within 12 to 24 months, depending on the category of development.
He noted that the intervention reflects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to expanding educational infrastructure and improving the welfare of students across the country.
The initiative is expected to significantly reduce overcrowding in hostels and ease the burden on students who often struggle to secure affordable accommodation near campuses.
