Security forces have foiled another attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Plateau State, forcing suspected gunmen to retreat after a fierce exchange of gunfire.

The attempted attack, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, marks the second assault on the nation’s foremost policy institution in less than two weeks.

The Nigerian Army said troops of Sector VI, Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace, responded swiftly after the attackers attempted to infiltrate the institute’s security perimeter at about 12:10 a.m.

During the gun battle, one of the attackers was neutralised, while others fled with gunshot wounds. The Army said no military personnel or civilians were killed or injured during the operation.

Security forces also recovered an AK-pattern rifle loaded with 16 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition. Military authorities disclosed that the rifle had earlier been stolen from a soldier who was killed during an attack by militia members at the Federal College of Land Resources Technology, Vom, on April 11.

Following the operation, troops launched clearance and pursuit operations in the surrounding communities to track down the fleeing suspects and strengthen security around the institute.

The Army reiterated its commitment to protecting strategic national assets and called on residents to remain vigilant by reporting suspicious movements and activities to security agencies.

The latest attack comes barely two weeks after gunmen stormed the NIPSS staff quarters on June 16, killing two soldiers and a police officer before security reinforcements restored normalcy. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
