President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has said the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will continue to evolve into a capital city that reflects Nigeria’s growing population, economic aspirations, and national identity.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to infrastructure-led development, noting that improved transport connectivity in Abuja would reduce logistics costs, encourage investment, and support job creation.
The President made this known on Wednesday in Abuja while commissioning the full-scope development of Arterial Road N5, Obafemi Awolowo Way, which connects Life Camp Junction to Ring Road III in Dape District.
He was represented at the event by Vice President Kashim Shettima, GCON.
Tinubu described infrastructure as a key measure of national seriousness and state capacity, stressing that his administration would continue to invest in strategic projects that enhance connectivity, economic activity, and public confidence in governance.
“Infrastructure is the measure by which every civilised nation announces its seriousness. No capital can carry the weight of national ambition if its arteries are blocked by neglect, excuses and abandoned promises,” he said.
The President also said his government remains determined to transform Abuja into a capital city capable of matching the ambitions of the federation and serving as a model of planned urban development.
He further stated that there had been no interruption in the rehabilitation and construction of inherited road projects, adding that his administration has ended the era of abandoned infrastructure.
Speaking on the Dape District section of the Arterial Road N5, Tinubu said the project was conceived, funded, and completed under the current administration, following its award to Julius Berger with a 15-month completion timeline after flag-off in October 2024.
He noted that the project reflects a shift away from prolonged delays and repeated budget cycles that previously stalled infrastructure delivery.
The President commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barr. Nyesom Wike, for driving infrastructure development across Abuja, and also praised the contractor for timely delivery.
He described the road as an economic asset, noting that it would ease traffic congestion around Life Camp Junction and improve mobility across key districts including Dape, Karmo, Gwarinpa I, Kado, Idu, and Mbora, as well as access to the Idu Industrial District.
Tinubu, however, urged residents and businesses to support infrastructure sustainability through tax compliance and proper land-related payments, while also calling for protection of public infrastructure against vandalism.
Earlier, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, commended the President for his support for infrastructure development in the territory, particularly in satellite towns, describing ongoing projects as evidence of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Minister of State for FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmud, also praised the administration’s leadership and support for key infrastructure projects across the territory.
Similarly, the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority, Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda, said the completed road would significantly improve connectivity between adjoining communities in the FCT and boost urban mobility.
Federal lawmakers and senior FCT officials were among dignitaries present at the commissioning ceremony.
