President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has applauded the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) for their unanimous support of the four Tax Reform Bills currently under consideration by the National Assembly. He described the move as a demonstration of their dedication to advancing Nigeria’s economic development and fostering national unity.
The governors reached their decision during a meeting in Abuja on Thursday, signaling their endorsement of the tax reforms, including proposed adjustments to the Value Added Tax (VAT) component of the bills. This follows earlier opposition expressed at the October 31, 2024, National Economic Council (NEC) meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Notably, some governors from northern states, such as Professor Babagana Zulum of Borno and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, had previously voiced concerns, citing potential negative impacts on their states’ economic interests.
However, in a statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu commended the governors for their leadership and their ability to bridge regional, ethnic, and political divides. He described the NGF’s latest stance as a testament to their commitment to building a competitive and unified Nigeria.
The President highlighted the productive dialogue between the NGF and the Presidential Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy, calling it a model for constructive collaboration between federal and state governments. He extended special recognition to NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq for rallying his counterparts to support the transformative reforms.
Tinubu also praised the Progressive Governors Forum, the Northern Governors Forum, and other groups for their bipartisan efforts in addressing initial concerns over the bills.
“These tax reforms are pro-poor initiatives designed to serve national interests, improve economic competitiveness, and attract both local and foreign investments,” the President said.
He underscored the importance of updating Nigeria’s outdated tax laws to create a more favorable environment for businesses and investments. Tinubu also encouraged stakeholders with constructive input on the bills to engage with the legislative process.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to collaboration, the President highlighted the governors’ critical role in driving national development. He urged the National Assembly to accelerate the passage of the Tax Reform Bills to enable Nigerians to benefit from the proposed changes without delay.
“This is a defining moment for Nigeria,” President Tinubu stated. “Through unity and collaboration, we will lay the foundation for a prosperous future.”
