The Rivers State House of Assembly has endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state, attributing the prolonged political crisis to the suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s actions.
Assembly Accuses Fubara of Tyranny
In a statement issued by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, the Assembly accused Fubara of despotic and unconstitutional governance, citing his repeated disobedience of court orders, failure to govern in line with his oath of office, and obstruction of the legislative arm of government.
“The Governor’s despotic and tyrannical actions, as confirmed by the courts, have unconstitutionally hindered the Rivers State House of Assembly from functioning,” Amaewhule stated.
Support for Presidential Intervention
Describing Tinubu’s decision as necessary for national interest, Amaewhule urged residents to remain calm as the Sole Administrator assumes leadership.
“We assure you all, our constituents, that we will abide by this declaration, even though it is not what we initially prayed for,” the statement read.
“Mr. President has acted in the best interest of the country. Therefore, we call on everyone to remain calm as the Sole Administrator appointed by the president takes charge for the stability of our state and nation.”
Commitment to Stability
The Assembly pledged full support to the Sole Administrator, vowing to assist in restoring stability and effective governance.
This state of emergency marks a pivotal moment in Rivers State’s year-long political turmoil, with the Tinubu administration stepping in to restore order.
