A tragic mass shooting at Florida State University left two people dead and five others hospitalized, authorities in Florida confirmed on Thursday.

The suspect, 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner—a student at the university and the son of a longtime Leon County Sheriff’s deputy—opened fire on campus before being shot by responding officers, according to FSU Police Chief Jason Trumbower.

“Two victims are deceased and five individuals have been transported to a local hospital with gunshot wounds,” Trumbower said.

Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil identified the shooter and confirmed his connection to the department. “Deputy Ikner has served with the Sheriff’s Office for over 18 years with distinction,” McNeil said. “Sadly, her son gained access to one of her service weapons, which was recovered at the scene.”

McNeil noted that Phoenix Ikner had long been involved with the Sheriff’s Office through its Youth Advisory Council and other training programs. “He was deeply familiar with our department, which unfortunately meant he had access to resources that should have been out of reach,” he added.

Authorities continue to investigate the shooting, as the campus community grapples with the devastating event.
