Serbia’s Novak Djokovic delivered an impressive performance on Day 3 of the 2025 French Open, advancing to the second round with a commanding 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 victory over American Mackenzie McDonald. The win, which lasted under two hours, set Djokovic on course for a potential record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title.
Fresh off claiming his 100th ATP title in Geneva just days earlier, the world-renowned tennis star, who is aiming to surpass Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam wins, proved his continued dominance. Djokovic’s first-round victory in Roland Garros was nothing short of clinical, though he did experience a brief lapse, failing to serve out the second set at 5-2. Undeterred, he promptly broke McDonald to secure the set and avoid any further complications.
At 38 years old, the Serbian legend, seeded sixth, is well aware that his career is entering a new phase. Reflecting on his longevity in the sport, Djokovic admitted that he is uncertain about how many more Grand Slams he has left in his career. “I don’t know how many more Grand Slams I’ve got left in my body,” he said to the cheering crowd at Court Philippe-Chatrier. “I’m just trying to enjoy every moment in this magnificent stadium,” he added, highlighting the importance of cherishing each match as he continues his journey in the sport.
Despite his advancing years, Djokovic remains motivated by numerous goals. He continues to train rigorously, ensuring that his physical and mental preparation is top-notch. “I spent quite a bit of time in making sure that every step of the way in preparation and prevention is respected in order for me to still be able to play on this level,” he stated. He also emphasized the mental challenges of being a seasoned professional. “There are always, you know, doubts. But there are also motivations and goals—what inspires you, what’s the purpose of you still competing.”
For the Serbian, history plays a pivotal role in keeping him driven. “Thankfully I have several different motivations that keep me going. Of course, history and making records and achieving great things in this sport is definitely one of them.”
Looking ahead to the second round, Djokovic will face the winner of the French showdown between Corentin Moutet and Clement Tabur. As he marches forward in his bid to make history, the tennis world watches with anticipation as the three-time French Open champion continues his pursuit of another major triumph.
