Nigeria Expresses Condolences to India Over Air India Flight 171 Tragedy

The Nigerian government has issued a heartfelt message of solidarity following the tragic crash of Air India Flight 171 in the Indian city of Ahmedabad on Thursday, June 12, 2025. The London-bound passenger aircraft, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, tragically crashed into a residential area, resulting in significant loss of life both on board and on the ground.

Rescue and Recovery Efforts
Rescue teams worked tirelessly through the night, with sniffer dogs helping search through the charred wreckage. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the back of the aircraft hanging precariously over a building it struck. Authorities confirmed that the crash killed at least 265 people, including 242 passengers and crew members. Among the casualties were those living in the housing complex that was struck, which was home to medical staff and their families.

“While initial reports suggest that no Nigerian nationals were aboard the flight, our embassy in New Delhi is in close contact with Indian authorities to verify these details and provide consular assistance if needed,” said Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Nigeria’s Solidarity with India
In the wake of this devastating event, the Federal Government of Nigeria has extended its deepest condolences to the people of India. “Nigeria stands with India in this period of immense grief and loss,” the Ministry’s statement said. The government also reiterated its support for a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash, emphasising the global importance of aviation safety.

Indian authorities, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressed their sorrow and pledged to do everything necessary to support those affected by the tragedy. “This is heartbreaking beyond words,” said Modi, as rescue teams continued their work into Friday morning. The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Kanan Desai, confirmed that the remains of 265 people had been transported to the hospital.

The disaster took place after the flight had taken off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and crashed shortly thereafter. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a fiery explosion when the jet crashed into a medical hostel. Local officials estimate that at least 24 people died on the ground, though the final death toll could rise as rescue operations continue.
