In a swift response to escalating security concerns, the Niger State Government has announced the immediate closure of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), located in Lapai. This decision follows a recent surge in security threats that resulted in tragic fatalities within the university’s campus community.

The announcement, made public through a statement from the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Abubakar Usman, underscores the increasing insecurity affecting the institution and the surrounding areas. According to the statement, the closure, which is effective immediately, will remain in place until further notice, with authorities working to restore safety in the region.

Governor Umaru Bago, who gave approval for the shutdown, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding the lives of citizens, particularly the students and staff at IBBU. “The safety and security of all citizens, particularly students and staff, is of utmost priority to the Niger State Government,” the statement reads. “We are deeply saddened by the unfortunate events, and immediate action is being taken to address the situation.”

The government has urged the university’s community—including students, staff, and residents—to remain calm and cooperative, assuring that full support will be provided by security operatives during this challenging period. It was further clarified that investigations are underway to identify those responsible for the recent violence. “We remain resolute in our commitment to upholding law and order and to safeguarding the lives and property of all residents in Niger State,” the statement concluded.

While the closure of the university is a temporary measure, it reflects the urgency with which authorities are addressing the security threats facing the institution. Further updates and actions are expected as investigations continue.
