BREAKING NEWS: House of Reps Proposes Single-Day Voting for All 2027 Elections

In a major electoral reform move, Nigeria’s House of Representatives has proposed that all five major elections in the 2027 general cycle be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on a single day. The proposal is part of the sweeping changes outlined in the newly introduced Electoral Act 2025.

If passed into law, the reform would mean that presidential, governorship, national assembly, state assembly, and FCT council elections will all take place simultaneously — a significant shift from the staggered voting system currently in use. Lawmakers argue the change will reduce electoral costs, minimize voter fatigue, and curb violence often associated with prolonged election cycles.

The proposed legislation is expected to spark widespread debate among political stakeholders, civil society groups, and electoral experts. Supporters hail it as a step toward greater efficiency and democratic consolidation, while critics may raise concerns about logistical feasibility and election security. INEC is yet to issue an official response to the proposal.
