Nigeria Nominates Dr. Taoheed Olufemi Elias for International Court of Justice

Abuja, August 13, 2025. The Federal Government has officially nominated Dr. Taoheed Olufemi Elias as Nigeria’s candidate for election to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The announcement was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, through a statement posted on X formerly Twitter.

Ambassador Tuggar described Dr. Elias as one of the most respected figures in international law, citing his extensive legal scholarship, decades of service to the global community, and his dedication to justice, equity, and the rule of law. He emphasized that the nomination reflects Nigeria’s commitment to a rules based international order where justice is impartial, peace is safeguarded, and all nations have an equal voice in shaping a fairer and more secure future.

The Minister called on the international community to support Dr. Elias’s candidacy, expressing confidence that his election will further strengthen global justice and promote the peaceful resolution of disputes among nations.
