Are Airfares on South-East and South-South Routes Being Exploitatively Hiked? FCCPC Launches Investigation

Share

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has launched a probe into the sharp increase in domestic airfares, particularly on routes serving Nigeria’s South-East and South-South regions. The move follows a surge in complaints from travellers who describe the rising ticket prices as exploitative.

The commission revealed that some airlines have reportedly hiked fares by as much as 150%, with one-way tickets now exceeding ₦300,000 on certain routes. While the FCCPC does not regulate airline prices directly, it is mandated to investigate anti-competitive or unfair practices under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA).

“The complaints we have received suggest possible coordinated pricing by some airlines, which could constitute a violation of consumer protection laws,” the commission stated. Investigators are reviewing airline pricing mechanisms and templates to determine if any collusive or opaque practices contributed to the surge.

Airlines have pushed back, with at least one major carrier reportedly challenging aspects of the investigation in court. However, the FCCPC emphasized that its probe will continue independently.

Travellers have expressed frustration over the timing of the hikes, coinciding with increased demand during the festive season. The FCCPC has assured the public that any unfair or anti-competitive practices identified will be met with enforcement action. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
